Heat wave was too much

BY JEAN SHEPHERD

I’m writing this in my air-conditioned house.

My worst fear is that we’ll lose power, and I’ll have to go to our community pool and stay in the water until dark. This is the weekend of the temperatures spiking to over 100 degrees.

It’s also the week that three of our grandkids are spending with us.

Naturally, they want to swim at the pool and surf at the nearby ocean. So far, Don has taken them without a peep, leaving me to handle the food and snacks.

I couldn’t be happier.

I just walked to the mailbox to drop a card, and wondered if I’d make it back to our driveway. It was 96 in the shade.

The girls and Don are at the beach. I’m tidying up and fixing some salads and meat to grill tonight.

I am so happy that he loves to take them wherever they want to go.

The tidying up takes a while. There are piles of bathing suits, shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops everywhere. It’s a mystery why all their things are on the floor.

There are chairs and beds all over the place.

I asked one of them once why she preferred to bend down to the floor to pick up a shirt instead of taking it off a hanger. She stared and laughed and said, "I really don’t know."

When we go somewhere, we learned the hard way not to touch the doors of the SUV, which is black.

The other day, we climbed in using the handle, and the indoor temperature readout was 104.

The leather seats were searing, and I vowed to wear long pants the next time, since it takes a while for the air conditioner to kick in.

Besides, most restaurants have the temperature icy, and I need a sweater anyway.

I sometimes wonder if this brutal heat followed by icy indoor temps is good for us. Our body is probably totally confused and finally gives up, hoping that winter is just around the corner.

The first thing I do every morning is walk into the kitchen in my pj’s to look at the indoor/outdoor temperature thingamajig in the window.

One has to be careful. Early morning temps are confusing. Sometimes I get caught in sweats, and the day heats up quickly.

But this kind of heat wave is much too soon for June. Where did spring go?

Remember the old-fashioned spring with the moderate warming which slowly turned into summer?

I don’t believe we’ll see such springs anytime soon. So we might as well make the best of it.

Early June and the girls are in the ocean surfing.

By the time you read this, let us hope the heat has moderated. No wonder the polar bears are worried.
