Dumont Doings


PROJECT GRADUATION 2009 — The Dumont High School Class of 2009 Project Graduation Committee will meet 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26 in the Dumont Senior Center, 39 Dumont Ave. The meeting agenda includes voting on the location of the party. All parents of 11th-grade students are invited.

 

ROTARY SEEKING MEMBERS — The Bergenfield-Dumont Rotary Club is seeking new members. The organization has supported the community for more than 75 years. It has provided more than $100,000 in scholarships to local high school graduates, has sponsored more than a dozen life-saving operations for children with heart ailments, and raised funds for the families of soldiers and others in need.

The club currently meets 12:15 ti 1:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the 200 Main Street restaurant in New Milford. Starting July 7, meetings will be at Tommy Fox’s Public House in Bergenfield.

Upcoming events will be a car and truck Show at the Teaneck Armory in October, a beefsteak and tricky tray also in October, and a fruit sale in November.

ST. MARY’S VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLSt. Mary’s Church in Dumont will hold its Vacation Bible School July 14 to July 18. Children are invited to come and join in Good News Games, a week of adventures, as they discover God’s love.

Vacation Bible School will run each day from 9 a.m. to noon, and children who have completed pre-K to fifth grade may register. The cost is $15 per child.

DEMOCRATIC DOINGS — The Dumont Democratic Organization will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. July 10 at the Schraalenburgh Inn on Madison Avenue.

Also on the agenda for July 12 is a friendly softball game between Dumont Democratic Club and the Dumont Republican Club at 2 p.m. at the Babe Ruth Field in Memorial Park.

BOOK AND BAKE SALEThe Guild of Old North Reformed Church will hold a book and bake sale on the church lawn from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12. In case of rain, the sale will take in the education building.

The church is located at Washington and Madison avenues. Tours of the historic building are available.

K of C EVENTS – Upcoming activities at St. John’s Council 1345, Knights of Columbus, serving Bergenfield and Dumont and celebrating its 100th anniversary include:

n Saturday, June 28 — 100th anniversary Mass, 3 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, Bergenfield. Afterward there will be a rededication ceremony and open house at the council, with complimentary food and beverages provided by the Columbiettes.

n Sunday, June 29 — Corporate Communion Mass and breakfast, 9 a.m. Mass. The last corporate Communion Mass of the Columbian year will be celebrated at St. John’s Church in Bergenfield. Assemble in the church vestibule at 8:45 a.m. for the entrance procession. After Mass, a continental breakfast will be served at the council hall.

n Monday, June 30 — Columbian Club, meeting 8 p.m.

DHS 50TH REUNION — The Dumont High School Class of 1958 will hold its 50th class reunion in October. The main event will be a buffet dinner/dance on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Englewood.

There will be a cocktail hour from 7 to 8 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and open bar, followed by a buffet dinner and dancing until midnight. The cost is $100 per person, which includes a booklet with pictures of classmates.

Also planned is an informal gathering at the hotel lounge on Friday evening and on Saturday, a tour of the high school and lunch.

DUMONT DAY 2008 — The Dumont Day Committee has made some changes for the 2008 celebration, which this year will include a free concert at Memorial Field featuring Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge in place of fireworks. The concert will be sponsored by Mariner Bank, which is picking up the cost.

 

RENT LEVELING BOARDThe Borough of Dumont seeks a landlord representative, a homeowner representative and a tenant representative to serve on the newly re-established Rent Leveling Board. Call Kathy in the borough hall at 201-387-5023 or e-mail her at kschaefer@dumontboro.org.

 

NEW BOY SCOUT TROOP — St. John’s Council 1345, Knights of Columbus, is the charter organization for a new Boy Scout troop forming in Dumont. The new group is known as Troop 1345, the same number as the council. The Scoutmaster is Keith Hilcken. ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION — The Dumont Environmental Commission meets 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month on the second floor of the borough hall. Meetings are open to the public; all are welcome.

 

PACKING ‘PEANUTS’ — Baskets-N-Beyond at 39 W. Madison Ave. will accept for recycling plastic foam "peanuts" used in packaging. For more information, call 201-384-7575.

 

PARKING PERMITS – Applications for commuter parking permits for the municipal lot in 2008 are available to Dumont residents and business owners on a first-come, first-served basis.

Permits may be obtained at the borough clerk’s office between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The fee is $120 per calendar year; there is one permit per household, transferable to up to two vehicles. Applicants must bring a copy of their driver’s license and registration for the car to be used.

DHS MUSIC BOOSTER ASSOCIATIONThe Dumont High School Music Booster Association encourages families of choral, band or color guard members to become a music booster.

Dues of $10 per family support choral luncheon, marching band/color guard dinner, senior awards/scholarships, choral camp, drum major camp, and water for half-time shows and the Memorial Day parade.

Checks should be made payable to DHS Music Booster Association and mailed to Laura Dripchak, 135 Hamilton Ave., Dumont NJ 07628. Include the name of the student and the music group in which he or she participates.

 

 

S.T.A.R.T. II PET ADOPTIONS — Save the Animals Rescue Team (S.T.A.R.T. II) holds dog and cat adoptions from noon to 4 p.m. every Sunday at Pet Valu in the Stop & Shop shopping center on Washington Avenue.

USED CELL PHONE DROPOFFArea residents may drop off used cell phones at the Dumont Public Library as a benefit for Operation Smile, which supports missions to 25 countries where teams of surgeons perform operations on children with hare lips. The collection of the phones, an initiative of the Cresskill Woman’s Club, will continue throughout 2008.

 

FAMILY NIGHT MOVIES — The Dixon Homestead Library hosts a Family Night movie every second Wednesday evening of the month. The event starts at 6:15 p.m. and usually ends by 8 p.m. There will be a free movie, free popcorn and refreshments.

 

 

CUB SCOUT SIGNUPS — Cub Scout Packs 131 and 23 are accepting registration for new applicants in first through fourth grade. The packs serve Grant, Honiss and private schools in the area.
