Dumont High School students Kevin Shea and Nicole Viray star in the school’s production of ‘The Pajama Game,’ which was nominated along with three other 2007-2008 DHS productions for a Cappies Award.

Two dramas staged by Dumont High School during the 2007-08 academic year have been nominated for awards by the North Jersey Metro Cappies.

They are "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Pajama Game."

The Cappies is a high school version of Broadway’s Tony Awards, celebrating the achievements of young emerging performers, designers and writers. But unlike most high school theater awards, students are the critics in this program, deciding the nominees and winners in each category.

In addition, the student critics are also nominated and awarded for their journalism skills.

The NJM Cappies includes Bergen County Academies, Cedar Grove High School, Cliffside Park, Dumont High School, Jersey City Arts High School, Passaic Valley Regional High School, Secaucus High School and Tenafly High School.

The Cappies was founded in 1991 by Judy Bowns, a theater resource teacher, and Bill Strauss, the founder of the Capitol Steps comedy troupe. What began as a local organization in Fairfax County, Va., is a now a national high-school-theatre awards program.

Twelve shows, more than 50 student-critics and numerous hours of rehearsals have all led up to the Cappies Awards Gala, which were schedule to take place Sunday at Passaic Valley Regional High School in Little Falls.

The Cappies is a foundation-supported, volunteer-run, non-profit charitable corporation. For additional information, visit www.cappies.com.
