Young scientists invent future gizmos

Future scientists, engineers and inventors from Transfiguration Academy's middle school campus in New Milford recently held a science and engineering fair to show off their projects. Sixth through eighth grade students worked independently or in teams for the past month on a variety of projects ranging from simple science experiments like the one shown here that demonstrated how citric acid can be used to generate power.

Eighth-graders Melissa Tan and Nicole Edillor display off their award-winning roller coaster project at the Transfiguration Academy science and engineering fair. They researched the effects of gravity and inertia on the performance of roller coasters and also investigated why some people are attracted to roller coaster rides while others avoid them. They discovered that many people carry an inherited gene, D4DR, that determines a person's thrill-seeking preferences.

TRANSFIGURATION ACADEMY

Future scientists, engineers and inventors from Transfiguration Academy’s middle school campus in New Milford recently held a science and engineering fair to show off their projects.

Sixth- through eighth-grade students have worked independently or in teams for the past month on a variety of projects ranging from simple science experiments, like using citrus juice to create battery power to elaborate engineering projects resulting in the creation of a hover craft utilizing a vacuum cleaner.

Each project involved asking a question, developing a hypothesis, following a procedure to test it, analyzing the results and drawing a conclusion with recommendations.

Students created tri-fold boards illustrating the steps they followed and set-up dioramas and displays so they could demonstrate their hypothesis to an audience of peers, family and faculty. Many students conducted their experiments off-site, videotaped them and presented them as PowerPoints on laptop computers.

At the end of the evening, a group of judges awarded prizes to the top exhibitors.
