Students at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County participated recently in the Continental Math League, a nationwide mathematics problem-solving competition.

They were involved in two separate leagues, one for second- and third-graders (third-grade math league); the other for the fourth- and fifth- grades (fifth-grade math league) from October 2007 to this past March.

Each week, participants learned content and strategies to prepare for five 30-minute math quizzes of six problems each for the fourth- and fifth-graders and three quizzes for the second- and third-graders.

Schechter student scores were compared to their peers around the nation for this competition. During the season, more than 500 participating schools sent in the top six scores from each meet to Continental Math League headquarters.

At a special ceremony at school, all of the Schechter students who participated were acknowledged with an award certificate from the Continental Math League.

Schechter is proud to have a number of top scorers for each division. Third-grader Aaron Lemmer and second-grader Zachary Zimmer were given special medals as the top two scorers respectively in the third-grade league.

In that division there were also six certificates of distinction awarded to third-graders Aaron Lemmer, Ally Kaplan, Rachel Pomeranz and Ben Stein and second-graders Zachary Zimmer and Matan Kogen.

In the fifth-grade math league, fourth-graders Samuel Garden, Zachary Hacklander and Brandon Osian earned special medals for their top three scores respectively. And in that division, five certificates of distinction were awarded to fourth-graders Samuel Garden, Zachary Hacklander, Brandon Osian, Tova Tencer and Ethan Silberstein.

Samuel Garden was the recipient of a unique medal of honor from the Continental Math League for achieving a perfect score on each of his five quizzes for the entire season. On the pages of the Continental Math League web site, Sammy is among a select group of only 67 students from across the country to have this honor within the Euclidean fifth-grade league.
