Fourth-graders at B. F. Gibbs School in New Milford have been involved in two statewide contests.

For one, each fourth-grade class created a PowerPoint slideshow that showed the various reasons we each love New Jersey.

Using Microsoft Paint, they illustrated pictures to highlight their answers, and added custom animations and transitions, as well.

The four classes did such a job on this project that the judges selected them all as winners.

Their slide shows will soon be uploaded to www.celebratenj.org for others to see.

For the second contest, students had to choose one newspaper editor that they would like to become.

The choices of editors included sports, people in the news, travel, science and technology, business, and arts and entertainment.

The students then needed to become this editor in order to research and write a 200-word article about New Jersey.

More than 6,000 students representing 270 classes from schools across the state participated. Each student will receive a ticket to attend the New Jersey Jackals baseball game on June 14. Selected students will have their articles published in local newspapers, as well.

The students worked on this project for months, not only in their classrooms, but also in the computer lab and at home.

Of the articles submitted by New Milford students, the judges selected 15 to publish, with 10 of those winning articles coming from students at Gibbs School.

The Gibbs Schools students are Jakob Terrana, Max Piasevoli, Haley Weininger, Mia Ferreras, Spencer Lee, Sarah Hahm, Robby Jurgensen, Tara Levine, Krista Wollerman and Erika Ramos.

They will be honored at a special awards night at the Williams Center for the Arts in Rutherford at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21.
