Obituaries


Thomas Ruddy
DUMONT — Thomas Ruddy, 75, of Dumont, died March 1 at home.
He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and lived in Dumont the last 36 years.
Before retiring in 1994, he was a conductor for Conrail in Weehawken for 18 years.
His wife, Patricia Morriroe Ruddy, died in 1994. Surviving are his children, Thomas J. and Maureen Ruddy of Sparta, Beth Ann Ruddy of Dumont, John J. and Mary Ruddy of Littleton, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral was March 4 at the Frech Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave., Dumont, followed by a private cremation.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Dumont NJ 07628.
Arrangements were made by the Frech Funeral Home of Dumont.

John M. Cartolano
BERGENFIELD — John M. Cartolano, 83, of Bergenfield, died March 2 at home.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Bergenfield for the last nine years.
Mr. Cartolano was an Army veteran of World War II and served with the 11th Airborne Division, first in gliders. He then volunteered and became a qualified parachutist in the communications platoon as a telephone lineman and troubleshooter.
On Aug. 30, 1945, the division was flown to Japan prior to the signing of the surrender. He served with the occupation forces until he was honorably discharged in January 1946.
Before retiring in 1987, he owned and managed Hailer Elevator Co. in New York City.
He had gone to work for the company as a mechanic’s helper, and was promoted to mechanic in 1947. He became a field supervisor in 1958 and vice president and secretary in 1963.
Mr. Cartolano held a master electrician’s license in New York City, and was a member of the Five Boro Electrical Contractors Association, the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, Elevator Industries Assoc., Elevator Educators Inc. and a member of the NAEC since 1966.
He was a member of Renaissance Masonic Lodge 1122 of New York City.
His wife, Thelma (nee Guzzi), died in 1998. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Patricia and Dave Morales of Albrightsville, Pa., Joyce and Michael Kail of Oakford, Pa., Janet Cartolano of St. Petersburg, Fla., Marilyn and Art Reiman, Boco Raton, Fla., and Noreen Cartolano of New Milford; six grandchildren and a great-grandson. He is also survived by long-time friend, Yvrose Fontaine.
A funeral Mass was offered March 6 at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Dumont, with entombment in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
Donations in his memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York NY 10016, or the American Heart Association, 2550 U.S. Highway 1, North Brunswick NJ 08902.

Lydia Rosa Soto
DUMONT — Lydia Rosa Soto, 88, of Dumont, died Feb. 28 in The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood.
She was born in Puerto Rico, lived in the Bronx, N.Y., and the last four years in Dumont.
She was the youngest child in a family of 16 brothers and sisters. She was a member of Iglesia Bautista Resurreccion Church, Dumont.
Predeceased in 2006 by Oscar Sr., her husband of 65 years, she is survived by her children, Oscar Jr of Great Falls, Mont., Eliezer of Dumont, Ivan of Bergenfield, Annibal of the Bronx, N.Y., Richard of Yonkers and Alida Marie Soto of Teaneck; her brother, Ulbano Rosa of Massachusetts; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was March 4 at the Frech Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave, Dumont, with burial in Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood.
Arrangements were made by the Frech Funeral Home of Dumont.

Almerindo Accomando
BERGENFIELD — Almerindo Accomando, 84, of Bergenfield died March 3 at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
Born in Italy, he came to the United States in 1966.
Mr. Accomando was a landscaper for Forcellati Bros. Inc., River Vale, before retiring in 1993.
Predeceased by his wife, Carolina Accomando, surviving are her daughter, Concetta and her husband Philip Vincenti; brother, Marco Accomando; and grandchildren, Michelle and her husband William Housley and Cynthia Vincenti.
There was a funeral liturgy at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield on Thursday, March 6 followed by entombment at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee.
Arrangements were by Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield.

Emelia A. McCullough Walsh
DUMONT — Emelia A. McCullough Walsh, 94, of Dumont, died Feb. 28 in Hackensack University Medical Center.
She was born in Hoboken, lived in Union City and the last 53 years in Dumont.
Predeceased by her husband, Dennis J. Walsh Sr. in 1998, she is survived by her sons, Roger F. Walsh and his wife Patti of Old Tappan, and Dennis J. Walsh Jr. of Dumont; her daughter, Diana Mc Cullough of Dumont; and six grandchildren, Jason, Erin and Michael McCullough, and Ryan, Tyler and Kelly Ann Walsh.
A funeral Mass was offered March 3 at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Dumont, with burial in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

Frederick R. Warnecke
NEW MILFORD — Frederick R. Warnecke, 79, of New Milford died March 1 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Cliffside Park, lived in Dumont and Bergenfield, and the last 43 years in New Milford.
Mr. Warnecke was a graduate of Bergenfield High School and was director of sales for Douglas Young Inc. in New York City for more than 20 years.
He was also an associate Realtor for Bergen Associates Realty in Bergenfield and a courier for Hoffman-LaRoche in Nutley for 15 years where he won many safe driving awards before retiring in 1995.
Mr. Warnecke served in the 104th Armored Engineer Battalion of the 50th Armed Division, New Jersey National Guard, for many years, attaining the rank of sergeant.
He was a long-time member of Old North Reformed Church in Dumont, where he met his wife, Joan, while they were singing in the church choir. They were married there on Oct. 19, 1952. He also taught Sunday school and was a deacon and an elder.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan (nee Pfail) in 2007 and is survived by a daughter, Laurie Heil of New Milford; a son, Rick Warnecke and his wife Delia of Poultney, Vt.; grandchildren, Ricky, Laela and Danny Warnecke; a sister-in-law, Carol Thompson of Virginia, nieces Cathy Shevenock and Jill Kelly–Willis; nephew, Jack Kelly; nephew and godson, Tom Kelly; and many cousins.
Memorial services were held March 6 at the Frech Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave, Dumont. and March 7 at Old North Reformed Church in Dumont, the latter officiated by the Rev. Richard J. Vanderborgh. Entombment was in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Old North Reformed Church.

Ida Cianfrone Meyer
BOGOTA — Ida Cianfrone Meyer, 98, of Bogota died Feb. 28 in Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
She was born in West Hoboken and lived in Bogota for 40 years.
Predeceased by her husband, Herman Meyer Sr. in 1982, she is survived by her two sons, Herman Meyer Jr. of Dumont and Robert Meyer of Mahwah; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Dewey E. Brown Jr. officiated at services on March 5 at the Frech Funeral Home, Dumont. Burial was in Hackensack Cemetery.

Joseph E. Murphy
DUMONT — Joseph E. Murphy, 63, of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., formerly of Dumont, died March 3.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had lived in Dumont and Dingmans Ferry.
Before retiring 20 years ago, he was a computer operator for Data Universal in Teaneck for 10 years.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Schweitzer Murphy; his children and their spouses, Joseph E. Jr. and Sherri Murphy of Jacksonville, Fla., Carolyn M. Murphy of Caldwell and Lynda M. and Bradley Bliss of Park Ridge; and his stepchildren, Patricia and Marc Mangano of Hillsdale, Deborah and Dana Reed of Montvale, and Pamela and Gabe Karlis of Englewood.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Joseph E. Murphy 3rd, Brandon Murphy Bliss, Adriana Mangano, Penelope and Demitra Karlis, and John and James Reed.
A funeral Mass was offered March 7 at St. Cecelia’s R.C. Church, Englewood. Burial was in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer St., Hackensack NJ 07620.

Philip Fabis
DUMONT —Philip Fabis, 82, of Dumont died Feb. 29 in Community Medical Center, Toms River.
He was born in Newark, lived in Teaneck and resided in Dumont for the past 52 years.
Mr. Fabis was a World War II Army veteran.
Before retiring 25 years ago, he was a salesman for AT&T in New York City.
He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron of Bergen County and a parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Dumont.
His wife, Catherine Ann (nee Walsh), died in 1991; his son, Thomas R. Fabis died in 1975.
Surviving are his son and his wife Philip M. and Kathleen Fabis; his daughter, Catherine A. Sienko of Tuscon, Ariz.; and and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was offered March 6 at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Dumont. Burial was in Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Dumont.
